My decorations have just been tucked away for another year, the flat looking a little bare without its festive adorations. I still get next level excited for the festive season and since I now have the luxury of decorating my own place, that’s just levelled up. Here’s something to inspire your next DIY Christmas, or the natural garnishes at your next event.
There was a brand new display just for this season amongst my festive decor - a fresh wreath, created entirely by me.
Sophie’s Flowers, based in Saltaire, runs all kinds of workshops depending on the season. What better to initiate the green fingered at Christmas than with a bespoke wreath? Honestly, I don’t pitch myself as a DIY master - if you’re the same then you can order your wreaths/bridal flowers/centrepieces bespoke with that same homely feel. But, I’m really quite impressed with how my DIY wreath turned out so you might be surprised with your capabilities, too.
The fresh foliage was piled high, with the very base of the wreath awaiting us at our stations. Choose your base leaves wisely to set the tone for the rest of your creation, the scale reaches from bushy and unruly to tightly bound - I think I set myself somewhere in the middle.
What Sophie made look very easy wasn't the unachievable challenge I'd pictured, but it definitely took some work to keep the leaves looking just 'done' enough, without taking it into artificial territory. Sophie took us through each layer step by step, then left us to bring our wreath imaginations to life.
The layers of festive garnishes are entirely optional, build on at minimal or go all out - what’s your style? I went for natural layers; dried fruit, pine cones, cinnamon sticks and a rustic bow to finish things off. There is all the glitter sprays, festive bows and metallic threads to amp it up if that's your style
Given that everything is fresh, there is a shelf life on your creation but it’ll last well through the festive season (and then some, if you want to keep it going). I've stashed mine away for the year in the hope it'll last... Let me report back on that aspect.
It was such a good experience and as it turned out so well, allowed me a sense of pride to hang it in my home! It got my green fingers tingling… Let’s see what’s up next.
